1. Have a Solid Budget

Moving abroad isn’t a two-week holiday. You’ll be moving to a new country to live for months, if not years, which means that having a solid budget is more important than ever.

The British fashion group Arcadia has fallen into administration, leaving 13,000 jobs at risk. Arcadia’s market share slumped from around 4.5% in 2015, to 2.7% in 2020. The group’s extensive portfolio of high street stores, which includes British high street staples like Dorothy Perkins, Burton, and Miss Selfridge, has long felt outdated.

Arcadia’s hold on the high street has waned over the years with dozens of outlets closing nationwide. Many industry experts and past employees lay the blame at owner Philip Green’s feet, citing lack of investment in online retailing and outdated ways of sourcing product.

Topshop, a stalwart of teen and 20-something fashion, and the jewel in the Arcadia crown, has become the latest fatality of this crumbling empire and undoubtedly the one that has tipped it into administration.

The legacy of the Topshop women’s fashion chain started in Sheffield and London in 1964, in the basements of the Read the rest

House price growth accelerated last month to the highest level in almost six years but market activity is at risk of slowing sharply.

Annual prices rose 6.5 per cent in November to an average £229,721, a pick-up on the 5.8 per cent growth in October. Month-on-month prices rose 0.9 per cent, from 0.8 per cent in October.

Despite rising unemployment and signs that the economic recovery lost momentum before the latest lockdowns the market has been buoyed by the stamp duty holiday, which is due to end on March 31 next year. Until then no stamp duty is due on purchases below £500,000; the tax break is worth up to £15,000 for buyers.

Property transactions rose to 105,600 in October, the highest level since 2016, and mortgage approvals for house purchases were at their highest level since 2007 at about 97,500, figures from the Bank of England show.

Eat Just Inc., a maker of meat and egg substitutes, has been approved to sell its laboratory-created chicken in Singapore, which becomes the first government to allow the sale of cultured meat.

The product, created from animal cells without the slaughter of any chickens, will debut in Singapore under the GOOD Meat brand as a chicken bite with breading and seasoning in a single restaurant. Eat Just is initially working with local manufacturer the Food Innovation and Resource Centre to make the cultured chicken. Additionally, the company is buying more equipment to expand sales to other restaurants — and eventually grocery stores.

“We want Singapore to be the focus of our manufacturing globally,” Chief Executive Officer Josh Tetrick said in an interview. “They’re just really forward thinking in … Read the rest

Investors who were around in 2009 might be having déjà vu this year.

That’s because the S&P 500’s run so far in 2020 has eerily tracked the market’s path in 2009, with similar dips and recoveries, strategists have pointed out. Randy Frederick, Charles Schwab’s vice president of trading and derivatives, is one such prognosticator who has long highlighted the roadmap’s accuracy this year—and even he is a little surprised.

“Amazingly, it never really deviated for more than just a few days,” Frederick tells Fortune. “I always expected it eventually to break down but it frankly just never did.”

What’s more, with that pattern having continued “a lot longer than I thought it would,” Frederick says, he believes “it’s pretty late in the game to think it’s going … Read the rest

The credit card processing system that we take for granted every day has a lot of moving parts. Last on my list would be one of the most important considerations I was having at this point early in my business setup. Low or no recurring monthly business banking service charges with the need to only maintain a low balance in my business banking accounts is a must at this time. I would not be opening my accounts with a lot of money, and I did not want what money I was depositing into my accounts to be eaten away at by service fees. I needed an account that would allow me to have a low minimum balance at the same time avoiding as many fees as I could. Many banks have accounts with no minimum balance requirements and no monthly fees for personal banking accounts, but this is usually not … Read the rest

STATE AGENCIES will have to significantly ramp up spending in December to boost fourth-quarter gross domestic product (GDP), after the government continued to underspend amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“The agencies were asked to implement catch-up plans to meet their original spending plans for the year. The catch up [spending plan] is intended to shore up the economy this Q4,” Budget Undersecretary Laura B. Pascua said via Viber on Friday.

Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III told various departments to ramp up spending in the remaining weeks of 2020, during a meeting of the Economic Development Cluster (EDC) two weeks ago.

Representatives from the Departments of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Transportation (DoTr), Education (DepEd), Tourism (DoT), Trade and Industry (DTI), and Agriculture (DA) attended the EDC meeting, said Ms. Pascua.

Anemic government spending was blamed for the 11.5% GDP contraction in the third quarter, which was worse than most analysts … Read the rest
