New rules mean corporate whistleblowers can get even more money as a reward from the Securities and Exchange Commission, potentially millions more—and get it faster.

While the very biggest rewards could be reduced under the new rules, they can still be staggering. In October, just weeks after adopting the new rules, the SEC awarded an anonymous whistleblower $114 million—by far the biggest award in the whistleblower program’s eight-year existence. Telling the government about corporate malfeasance can still make you rich, and some people think that’s a problem.

The Dodd-Frank law established the program, which can pay whistleblowers 10% to 30% of the amounts the SEC collects from actions it takes based on “original information” supplied by an individual. SEC fines can be huge, and so can the awards. In June, the SEC paid its then-biggest award ever, $50 million, to an individual who reported the overcharging of clients for … Read the rest

Environmental damage has been one of the biggest stories in recent years and it is clear that businesses need to be doing all that they can to reduce their carbon footprint. Businesses tend to have a much higher carbon footprint than households (some industries are much worse than others) and now is the time for companies to take action to join the global effort.

Why?

It is a matter of urgency to tackle climate change and reducing your carbon footprint is the best way to do this. In addition to reducing the usage of fossil fuels, you will also find that reducing your carbon footprint can bring a range of other benefits, including cutting your costs, future-proofing your business and improving your brand reputation. So, how can you go about doing this?

Be Energy Conscious

The first step is to become energy conscious which means thinking about how much energy … Read the rest

AT least half of the population needs to be vaccinated for the country to achieve herd immunity against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a health official said.

"If we are talking about herd immunity, we need to reach 50% to 60% across the population so it's really important we expand the coverage," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario S. Vergeire said in an interview with ANC on Friday.

Herd immunity is when most of the population becomes immune from an infectious disease, either through vaccination or a previous infection, thus indirectly protecting those without immunization.

A Social Weather Stations survey released late Thursday indicates 66% of Filipinos are keen to get experimental COVID-19 vaccines.

The mobile phone survey, conducted September 17 to 20, shows that of the 66% Filipinos who are "willing to get the COVID-19 vaccine if it is available now” consists of 32% who would “definitely” get it and 34% … Read the rest

Some Cineworld cinemas are set to never reopen after the coronavirus lockdown as bosses consider permanent closures and job cuts in a desperate bid to save the struggling cinema chain.

The company has been hammered by the pandemic, which forced industry-wide closures seeing them shut all 128 of its venues earlier this month of its own accord, rather than under government orders – with 5,500 people said to be at risk of losing their jobs.

A lack of new films has meant cinemas have struggled to draw in audiences in recent months, with the postponement of the latest James Bond picture, No Time To Die, cited as the potential final straw for many.

It was reported last night that Cineworld, which owes some £6.2 billion to its lenders, was lining up a rescue package as a result, and that slashing rents and shuttering swathes of sites could be required … Read the rest

Daily Facebook users see more than half a trillion posts annually that include hate speech, according to a new report, countering the social network’s recent claim that the problem is minor.

The finding, published by hate-fighting group Anti-Defamation League on Friday, is intended to force Facebook to do more to police hate and harassment on its service. The organization has long complained that the company has merely payed lip service to cleaning up racism and anti-Semitism.

The ADL report comes a day after Facebook for the first time detailed the scope of the hate speech on its service. The company said that only 10 to 11 of every 10,000 posts that users view contain hateful content.

But the ADL said that fails to take into account the algorithms … Read the rest

Passive engagement on social media is just as important as active engagement when it comes to quantifying success, according to Hootsuite, a social media management platform.

Passive engagement is defined as a consumer’s consumption of online content, such as reading a post or watching a video. Metrics for this form of engagement include video completion rates, link clicks, and website traffic. Active engagement, on the other hand, is often more popular among marketers, who measure success by the number of a post’s likes, shares, and comments.

“[Marketers are] still chasing virality and vanity metrics like retweets, comments, and shares, when the data tells us that the majority of online content is consumed passively,” said Sarah Dawley, content manager at Hootsuite.

Ms. Dawley cited Hootsuite’s digital data for October 2020, which found that the average Facebook user shared only one post a month and that Twitter’s unique website traffic was Read the rest

The manufacturers of the UK’s three biggest coffee pod brands have joined forces to set up the sector’s first national recycling scheme, in the face of a backlash against single-serve capsules, many of which end up in landfill.

Nestlé, the owner of Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto, and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) UK – which makes Tassimo – are next year launching the first system to make it easier and more convenient for consumers to recycle pods in a number of different ways.

Local councils are being invited to provide kerbside collection for pods alongside other household recycling. Consumers will also be able to leave them at 6,500 Yodel dropoff points, and, eventually, hand them over on the doorstep when their supermarket online shopping has been delivered.

The overarching national scheme – run by a new not-for-profit organisation called Podback – aims to replace a complex patchwork of different recycling … Read the rest

The World Health Organization recommended against using Gilead Sciences Inc.’s remdesivir to treat hospitalized COVID-19 patients less than a month after U.S. regulators granted the drug a speedy approval.

“There is currently no evidence that it improves survival or the need for ventilation,” a panel of WHO-convened experts developing COVID-19 treatment guidelines said in The BMJ medical journal.

The recommendation is a blow to Gilead’s drug, which was one of the first thought to offer a meaningful benefit in treatment of coronavirus patients after a study showed it reduced their recovery time. The antiviral has been used widely to treat COVID and was among the drugs President Donald Trump received when he was diagnosed with the disease in early October.

Instagram is becoming immensely popular among social media influencers, market analysts, online brands, and businesses. They use Instagram for targeting the right audience, running Instagram campaigns, and brand monitoring and marketing. For this purpose, almost all Instagram marketers and influencers use marketing automation tools such as Instagram bots. With the help of Instagram bots, Instagramers can manage multiple accounts, gain significant followers, likes, and comments, and reach the target audience in no time. In short, Instagram bots speed up the marketing process.

Nonetheless, no social media platform encourages bots. The same is the case with Instagram. Instagram can block fake or bot-driven accounts as they go against their policies. However, Instagram marketers can buy Instagram proxies to bypass restrictions.

With this in mind, this article talks about the reasons to use Instagram proxies at length. But before getting into it, let’s first know what exactly Instagram proxies are. Let’s … Read the rest
